"Acknowledging the financial crisis faced by many residents across our Borough who find themselves unable to afford to heat their homes in the cold weather this winter, will The Leader of the Council write to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, The Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP, in the name of Ashford Borough Council and on behalf of all pensioners in this Borough, denouncing the callous and unjust removal of the Winter Fuel Payment and urging her and HM Government to take immediate steps to restore the payment in time for Winter 2024/2025 which is fast approaching?"

That the Council express its support for the Leader's action in writing to the Chancellor and suggesting a discretionary fund, and further ask the Leader to write an additional letter requesting the reinstatement of the Winter Fuel Allowance.

 

 

Resolved:

 

That the Council resolves to request the Community Grants Panel discuss and amend bullet point 9 of the guidance to the Member’s Grant Policy, taking into account the points raised today, and that a revised version is then presented to Cabinet for adoption, as soon as possible, and in time for the 2025/2026 financial year’s Member Grant programme.

NOTE: - If debate on any item included within this Agenda gives rise to the need to exclude the press and public due to the likelihood of Exempt or Confidential information being disclosed the following resolution may be proposed and seconded and if carried, the press and public will be requested to leave the meeting for the duration of the debate.

That pursuant to Section 100A(4) of the Local Government Act 1972, as amended, the public be excluded from the meeting during consideration of this item as it is likely that in view of the nature of the business to be transacted or the nature of the proceedings that if members of the public were present there would be disclosure of exempt information hereinafter specified by reference to the appropriate paragraphs of Schedule 12A to the Act, where in the circumstances the public interest in maintaining the exemption outweighs the public interest in disclosing the information.
